3-D Minecraft Architectural Research Build | 6-12 | Take game playing up a level to game learning with Minecraft's "building blocks". Students will engineer virtual worlds--from building houses to creating an entire city. From proportions, dimensions, and unit conversion to city management, Minecraft offers worlds of opportunity for much learning. Minecraft is more than a game. It is a 3D Computer-Aided Design package as well. Students will be assigned to research a significant architectural building from recent or ancient history. From there, they will replicate that structure in Minecraft in 3D!, adhering to design integrity and add their own special touches. Developing a city from these structures is the ultimate goal! Students will be required to submit a complete report along with presenting their build upon completion. The report will include the following: cover sheet, 10-15 facts about their build, 2-3 screenshots, and a builder's blog. Students are required to print these documents at home. Advanced Biology Lab: Anatomy and Physiology | 9-12 | This is the required companion class to Advanced Biology Lecture: anatomy and Physiology. Labs will relate to the topics covered in the lecture portion : the human body's 11 organ systems in detail. Students will work collaboratively in a lab setting to understand the concepts of Advanced Biology. Homework: Assigned each week by teacher and is expected to be completed before coming to class. Advanced Biology Lecture: Anatomy and Physiology | 9-12 | This is one part of our two-part advanced biology course (the other is Advanced Biology Lab: Anatomy and Physiology). It covers both the anatomy and the physiology of the human body's 11 organ systems in detail. In a flipped-classroom format, students will be expected to read the chapters and complete the Review Questions before going to class. This class closely follows a syllabus so that the students always know what is expected of them. Students will be required to complete assignments each week. Tests will be taken at home which will be monitored by parents. Class time will be devoted to lecture. The companion class "Advanced Biology Lab" provides a full lab experience in which students perform experiments adapted from the book as well as additional experiments which reinforce the concepts they are learning. Algebra 1 | 9-12 | Algebra 1 is the first high-school level math class in a student's educational journey. We reviewing order of operations as well the distributive, commutative and associative properties. We will learn graphing, simultaneous equations, exponents, polynomials, unit multipliers, and more. Students will cover majority of the chapters in the required textbook. Homework will be assigned each class period to be done at home during the following week. There will be regularly scheduled tests as well. Calculators are allowed at home and in class. Students will be required to purchase their textbook(s). Weekly assignments posted online. Algebra 2 | 9-12 | Let's review exponents and some other Algebra 1 stuff and then get into rational expressions, scientific notation, combining like terms, radicals, factoring polynomials, fractional exponents, and more! Alternative Energy Projects with Lego | 6-12 | This class will focus on energy and forms of energy. Using special Lego kits, students will explore real world application using alternative energy resources. We will investigate concepts of energy, electricity, and the environment. Students will be introduced to solar, wind and water energy, explore the capabilities of each. Students will understand the benefits and technology of renewable energy. Students will be able to construct waterwheels, windmills, and other energy-related technology and carry out experiments to see the capabilities of renewable resources. American History | 9-12 | MOON: In This is a 2-semester class, secondary students will study the history of the United States. The first semester will concentrate on major themes of European settlement and the beginning of the nation through the Civil War period. The second semester will begin with the Reconstruction period and continue through the modern era. Students will be required to complete readings and activities outside of class to be prepared for discussions presentations and cooperative learning experiences during class meetings. Anatomy | 9-12 | This course is for students who are seeking a basic understanding of anatomy and physiology and how it affects their daily lives. This is a full science course digging deep into a great topic! This class will enable students to develop an understanding of the perfectly-designed relationships between the structures and functions of the human body. Students will have fun exploring the major systems of the human body and discover how all of these systems work together. Become the Athlete You Want To Be | 9-12 | Whether you are a competitive athlete or just getting started, do you want to work hard and take it to the next level? We will work together to accomplish this utilizing sports, conditioning, and games. You will love this fun class because it will be structured, intensive, and physically demanding. Beyond Borders | 6-8 | Based off of curriculum put out by National Geographic (https://www.nationalgeographic.org/education/), this class will use maps to look at how a country's borders can cause both a geographical and human intersection, and how these intersections can lead to cooperation and or conflict. In addition to maps, this class will use multimedia and case studies that will enable students to develop skills in map analysis and apply that analysis to specific situations. Biomes & Ecosystems | 3-5 | In this class, we will explore Earth’s terrestrial and aquatic biomes (community of plants and animals). We will spend time exploring the wonders of the ocean, forest, desert, and tundra. We will learn about a variety of sea creatures, plants, animals, and the exciting jobs that allow people to explore the world around us. Book Study and Composition | 6-8 | Join in on this fantastic study of some really great books. We will choose at least one book each semester. During our meaningful reading adventure, we will also work on socratic discussion, vocabulary, writing, literary analysis, and critical analysis skills. Botany | 6-8 | Introduce your naturalists to plants! Botany is the scientific study of plants and their relationship to the environment. In this course, students investigate the growth, reproduction, anatomy, morphology, physiology, biochemistry, taxonomy, genetics, and ecology of plants. Bringing Home Dessert | 6-12 | *Dietary restrictions cannot be accommodated in this class. In this class the student will be preparing various desserts such as pies, brownies, and cookies to bring home for the family to enjoy. Building Our Brain with Critical Thinking | 6-12 | Critical thinking skills are more important than ever in academic and real-world situations. Students will exercise their higher-order thinking when they get involved with these activities that build and grow problem-solving skills in engaging formats such as logic and visual puzzles, brainteasers, picture comparison, word play, and what if questions. The lessons help students apply critical thinking skills across subject areas. The in-class lessons guide students to make deeper connections between their learning and the real world. Castles, Catapults, and Kings | 1-3 | Students love this class because they get to discover the history of medieval castle life and be amazed by its construction. Character Development | 1-3 | This class will cover various character qualities throughout the semester and then apply those qualities by participating in a community-building project. Chemistry Lab | 9-12 | Required companion class to Chemistry Lecture. Experiments may include measuring specific heat, discovering the electrical conductivity of compounds dissolved in water, measuring the width of a molecule, exploring freezing, point depression, using the ideal gas equation, recognizing the effects of catalysts, and much more. Chemistry Lecture (Self Pay) | 9-12 | PREREQUISITE: Algebra 1. This is a 2-part section, the other being "Chemistry Lab." This is a year-long high school class designed to enrich students understanding of the text through discussions, lectures and working out problems together in class. Topics include significant figures, units, classification, the mole concept, stoichiometry, thermochemistry, thermodynamics, kinetics, acids and bases, redox reactions, solutions, atomic structure, Lewis structures, molecular geometry, gas laws, and equilibrium. Algebra 1 is a prerequisite for this class because students will apply algebra throughout the year in each module. College Prep Writing & Research | 9-12 | PREREQUISITE: Students must have taken and passed a high-school level essay-writing class or have taken Building Better Essays. This challenging course provides the practice of expository and personal writing for college and career readiness. The first semester will focus on writing 5 paragraph essays in MLA formatting starting with an outline, strong thesis statement, introductions with a hook, concise body paragraphs, and strong conclusions. Most essays will require some research online. Students will learn common writing mistakes, grammar, editing, and rewriting while making the process an encouraging experience! Teacher guided peer reviews will help students grow in their writing process. The second semester will follow a similar format to College Composition 1 and 2 writing 4-page persuasive essays requiring research and an MLA Cite Work page with in-text citations. Creative Writing | 9-12 | KAPUSTA: Students will have the opportunity to work on their stories during class and are welcome to use their laptop, tablet, or phone if they prefer that to handwriting. We will be discussing the elements of fiction including story arcs, character development, creating backstories, various literary devices like foreshadowing, red herrings, etc. Students can choose to write various stories throughout the semester or to work towards a book. Voyage into the Middle Ages | 3-5 | Come aboard to sail through the Middle Ages for a truly fun, historical journey. This collaborative jaunt includes weekly hands-on projects using interactive notebooks to help students accurately navigate and attach meaning to the big idea of feudalism in the Middle Ages by exploring its major places, significant medieval events, key people and the interesting vocabulary of their times. Students need one composition book (like the traditional black/white kind), scissors, colored pencils/crayons/markers, pencils, pens, glue stick/pen/bottle, and a creative mind. World History | 9-12 | MOON-A study of world history from 476 A.D. to 1900. Instructor presentations introduce European, American and Middle Eastern, Asian and African settings followed by discussions and student research assignments. A written historical outline provides a base from which students begin personal research directed by the instructor. The body of knowledge is so vast, an individual needs to delve into a specific area to get a firm hold of it. In the classroom, the individual findings will be put together into a cohesive whole. This shall introduce students to research skills and the best practices for collecting and presenting information. It will soak the student in all aspects of each period. Weekly assignments posted online. HOUCK: This course will focus on the earliest recorded history continuing to the Protestant Reformation. Students will explore geography, timelines, and learn about the major world events. By the end of the course, students will have an overview of "what was happening when" in the world and what life was like for the people during that time. World Literature & Composition | 9-12 | This course will focus on world literature and historical events. From early civilization to the modern era, students will explore writings, plot lines, and genres that come from across the globe. Major world events will be discussed and how they affected society and authors. The students will study different worlds, dystopian societies and various time periods, comparing and analyzing the literature as they go along. By the end of the class, students will have knowledge of what happened in the past that shaped our world today! Students will be required to do weekly homework including reading and writing. Writing with Confidence | 6-8 | In this class, students will learn how to organize their thoughts and write an effective essay. They will learn which thoughts are important and how to write a productive topic sentence along with supporting ideas. We will review writing an organized paragraph and move onto 5 paragraph essays consisting of writing an outline to organize thoughts, interesting introductions with hooks and a thesis statement, clear and concise body paragraphs, and strong conclusions. We will write variations of essays like compare and contrast, persuasive, research, and creative writing. Some public speaking will also be included - all in an encouraging atmosphere!
